Hillcrest is set on the southerly edge of Wigtown in a quiet residential area, with open views over farmland and out to the Solway Firth.  There is a 5/10 minute walk up a hill to the town centre where you will find several cafes, restaurant, book shops,  ATM, small Co-op supermarket, chemist and a post office.

There is a viewing room for the LNWR in the County Building and a bird-hide at the harbour.

Managed by Forestry Commission Scotland - there are 3 visitors centres in the region - the closest is Kirroughtree, which has a lovely cafe, bike hire and is home to one of the 7-Stanes cycle routes.  Clatteringshaws and Glentrool are also with easy driving distance.  All worth a visit, perfect for walking , cycling and wildlife / bird watching. www.gallowayforestpark.com/

They are displayed alongside many other colourful specimens from around the world with unusual items such as the 4.5 billion year old, three kilogram meteorite, the fossilised egg and dung of a dinosaur! In 2009 the Galloway Forest Park became one of only four Dark Sky Parks in the western world and the only one in the UK.Due to our lack of light pollution once the sun sets the 300 square miles of forest becomes one of the best places for star gazing in the country.  The park also includes The Dark Skies Observatory on the edge of the forest in Dalmellington
