Hillcrest is set on the southerly edge of Wigtown in a quiet residential area, with open views over farmland and out to the Solway Firth.  There is a 5/10 minute walk up a hill to the town centre where you will find several cafes, restaurant, book shops, bank / ATM, small Co-op supermarket, chemist and a post office.

There is a viewing room for the LNWR in the County Building and a bird-hide at the harbour.

In 2009 the Galloway Forest Park became one of only four Dark Sky Parks in the western world and the only one in the UK.Due to our lack of light pollution once the sun sets the 300 square miles of forest becomes one of the best places for star gazing in the country.  The park also includes The Dark Skies Observatory on the edge of the forest in Dalmellington
